In an effort to stop this blog from becoming solely a music blog, I decided to outsource some writing to a cousin of mine who is interested in these sorts of things, or something. My cousin (Real Name: Michael Benjamin Siegel) has been pursuing his dream of becoming Long Island’s best and most eclectic club/ event promoter. Upon undertaking this endeavor, he decided to keep his ears and eyes open for new trends so he could use them to promote eclectic club events and such. His journey involves a unyielding search for a nebulous quality that Michael refers to as “the freshness.” This is a place where Michael looks at upcoming music releases, talks about them, and contemplates their relationship to “the freshness.” This column was mostly unsolicited and I tried to tell him that I don’t have a huge following (HOWEVER, I WAS LINKED ON LARGE-HEARTED BOY !! !!! !!1!!!!) but he didn’t listen. Lastly, Michael has changed his name to something more appropriate for his job. He altered his middle name and dropped the ‘l’ in his last name. Without further, italicized ado, I give the world Mr. Bentley Siege. . .
What’s good, everybody? My name’s Bentley, and I’m gonna keep you posted on the happenings for the future of music. I’ve done some research (which I’ll call ‘search from here on out) and picked some of the freshest releases from all sorts of music coming out in January.
First, a little about me. My dream is to own a successful empire of all sorts of lounges, clubs, etc. around the Long Island area. The NYC is great and I’ma let it finish (Whatup 2009!) but Long Island is such a vibrant place. It’s like Billy Joel says, you either date a rich girl from the north shore or a cool girl from the south shore 😉 I’m just playing, north shore crew. You know you chill. Long Island is great, though. I was out at Montauk, enjoying the vibe. I met this older guy, and he surfs every day in the summer! He used to work for a corporation, but he was successful enough that he’s working on ventures on the East End. Living the dream, man. Not my dream though since there was no club empire. One step at a time!
I am writing this anticipated releases thing for my benefit as much as your own. I was talking to my mom, and she said my cousin (Whatup Cuz!) had this internet thing going on. Immediately, I messaged him and offered my support/ help. I had alterior motives though 😉 I wanted to keep up on all sorts of music, since that is necessary to be successful in my industry (No joke: One of the biggest turn outs I ever saw on a Wednesday was at “I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor” night, which focused on “indie” stuff. Pretty cool stuff. Sometimes, if I need to guest DJ, I’ll play that Animal Collective song “My Girls.” Trippy stuff). Let’s get crackin’, y’all!
2010! Crazy! This is sorta how I feel bout dat.
Just kidding, everybody! Man, that brings back Warped Tour memories! Whatup to The Downtown!
Lots of cool stuff, lots of hip stuff this month. Here’s some stuff that gets close to the freshness.
January 5th, 2o10
Animal – Ke4ha Ke$ha – January 5th, 2010, A day which will live in infamy cuz Ke$ha blew all our speakers up! Imagine if that song was called “Tic Tac.” Crazy!

Heartland – Owen Pallett – I really got into the whole promotions biz after I spent a summer traveling Europe. I tried to see Owen Pallett (then Final Fantasy) play on a boat on the Danube in Austria. No dice, though! Gig was sold out. I hear this guy can play a mean violin and just booms creativeness.
I don’t know how I feel about his name change though. I never played the video game but I saw Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. It was visually stunning. It was like Avatar but a buncha years ago! Check it out.
I think the blogosphere and internet seekers (Whatup, James Murphy!) will dig this. Hopefully, there will be some sweet remixes (which I will refer to as re’m’s).
Of the Blue Colour of the Sky – OK Go – These guys had that amazing video on the treadmills that ushered us into the internet era. Hopefully, when I architect my dream club, there will be a floor with some really cool conveyor belt effects. Just playing, but man, that would be dope!
Contra – Vampire Weekend – I did some ‘search on the blogosphere. There’s buzz about this sophomore release. People either seem to love or hate VW (Sort of like Uncle Bob, right Johnny? Just playing, cuz!) but they have a sweet post-lounge club vibe that I dig. Again, hopefully there’s some sweet re’m’s for these tunes.
Also, this video is crazy! Who are these guys, OK Go?!

Transference – Spoon – These guys are like elder statesmen of their scene, so props to them. Check it out.
Intimate Moments for a Sensual Evening – Aziz Ansari – This cat’s mad funny. I hope there’s lots of Raaaaaaaandy on this though!
Astro Coast – Surfer Blood – These dudes used to matriculate with Tim Tebow!

Teen Dream – Beach House – (Just a warning y’all: If you are searching for this album cover, make sure you type in ‘Teen Dream Beach House’ for the Google Images search. ‘Teen Dream’ alone brings back different results). This album is getting lots of props. In my ‘search, I found these guys are getting MPP coverage (Meriweather Post Pavilion, fo yo info). I’ma go out on a limb but I don’t think they will disappoint. Beach House is this year’s AC!
I was in my boy Kris’s home studio last week and we did a sick re’m of this band’s song “Norway.” We sped it up and got this acid-house tom just pumping the whole time. Release info TBA!
Laws of Power – Three 6 Mafia – Remember when these cats won an Oscar? That was a great ceremony. That year, Crash won Best Picture. I know it has hatas out there, but it was a great movie. It really made me think about racism and identity and stuff. Sure, I saw Brokeback Mountain too, but you can’t tell me it was better than Crash 😉 . Racism is a bigger deal than homophobia or the cattle industry anyway.
Academy Award Winners!
Realism – Magnetic Fields – Any band that has something called 69 Love Songs is okay by me. Just playin’ y’all!
See you in February! Until then
